Squatters given six months to vacate land

Land Tribunal President, Boitumelo Kaisara, has upheld an order by the Kweneng Land Board and ordered some squatters at Sebotswana Village in the Kweneng District to move off the plots they are occupying as they are squatting.
The squatters have appealed to the Court on grounds that they have already developed the plots they are being asked to move from and that they have occupied them for a long time.
The Land Board, on the other hand, submitted that Sebotswana is not zoned for settlement but for grazing, further that the Council is experiencing difficulties in taking services to the people and that they have to contain the sprawling of ungazetted settlements and that some of those people who have squatted at Sebotswana already have plots in the village of Ditshegwane.
In her judgment, Kaisara said that self allocation of land is undesirable and that it could lead to lawlessness and should be visited with appropriate orders. She ordered that they should vacate the plots they are occupying within 6 months, failure to which reasonable force would be used to evict them from the plots to restore the land to its original use and that the appellants should pay the costs of their eviction.
The Land Boards were recently ordered by President Ian Khama to act swiftly against squatters.
A month ago, squatters’ houses were demolished in Mmamashia and Ramaphatlhe.
