Suicides, murder sting Letlhakane residents

Letlhakane in the Boteti Sub District is experiencing an unusual wave of suicides and murder.
Two men, both in their early 50s, were found hanging on trees in separate incidents last week.
The other incident concerned some youthful lovebirds who both committed suicide.
A police official said that these incidents have deeply affected the Letlhakane residents and conceded that it is not yet clear what transpired to cause the suicides.
Superintendent Loeto Ramabokwa of the Letlhakane Police Station confirmed that a 55-year-old man was found hanging from a tree in the bush in Letlhakane and at the same time, a 52-year-old man from Rakops was also discovered by a passerby hanging from a tree.
It is not yet known why the two men took their lives but police investigations are still ongoing.
Ramabokwa said police do not suspect any foul play.
He said the 55-year-old was a herd man and was visiting his relatives while the other was also visiting his relatives but both men committed suicide before reaching their destinations.
The other incident that left residents of Letlhakane reeling in shock concerned a 24-year-old man who is suspected to have killed his 20-year-old girlfriend before committing suicide the same day.
Superintendent Ramabokwa said they got a call in the afternoon from an unidentified source who reported that a man and a woman were fighting inside a house.
When the police got to the scene, they broke into the house and found the woman lying on the floor with a wire around her neck while the man was hanging from the rafters of the house.
“The two bodies were certified dead on the spot and were taken to Francistown Hospital for examination,’ he said.
Ramabokwa added that they suspect that the man strangled the woman with the wire before he hanged himself.
Post mortems will be performed as police investigations continue.
All the deceased were expected to be buried yesterday (Saturday) although police investigations will continue.
