As a party of change, the BCP is supposed to be a responsible, conscientious, introspective and sensitive organisation, and conduct its business with unusual care. It should not be flunkey. Its strategic actions should be unquestionably plausible, valid and morally upright.

Botswana National Front president, Otsweletse Moupo, has once again survived attempts by some of the members of his Central Committee to axe him.

But indications are that the Central Committee is heavily divided.

At a meeting held Friday night, Moupo turned down calls to resign, instead he offered to take a six week leave to resolve his problems.

A Botswana newspaper, written in Chinese, has hit the local newsstands. The newspaper, which is being given away free of charge, circulates mostly at the Oriental Plaza, Broadhurst Industrial site- otherwise known as Gaborone’s China Town.

They sell cheap cigarettes and fruits on rickety makeshift tables at the Gaborone and Francistown bus and taxi ranks. The women, clad in white dresses and matching head scarfs, are almost invisible to most commuters who do not smoke.

They are, however, part of a huge regional cigarette smuggling syndicate that is targeting Botswana and South Africa.
