The Botswana Defense Force (BDF) recently hosted the volleyball finals and an award ceremony at the Sir Seretse Khama Barracks (SSKB) in Mogoditshane to mark the end of their Inter formation volleyball competition which started on Monday last week.
The tournament involved all BDF camps, from their many different camps in Botswana.
The prevailing winners were Combat Logistics Formation, who had been the defending champions of the award for three times in a row.
Their winner’s final was played against Engineering com.
The intensity of the match between the two saw the game ending after 3 sets even though there are normally 4 sets in a volleyball match if the game is undecided by the 3rd set.
The first set resulted in a narrow margin of 21-25 in favor of Logistics; the second set was also led by Logistics but by a now wider margin of 15-25.
The third set was the most exciting as Engineering com wanted a chance to win the championship.
According to the rules of the game, Engineering com stood a chance to win the match if they won the 3rd set as there was only one more left.
Having earlier given up, the supporters of Engineering regained their morale as their team began leading its opponents 9-5.
The Logistics team wanted to win and avoid another set and take the trophy home, thus were well energised.
The third set saw Engineering com putting the Logistics boys under heavy pressure even though they had been almost asleep in previous sets.
After leading 22-19, Engineering was suddenly overpowered by the defending champions until the final score became 23-25 in favour of Logistics.
The adrenaline had put the soldiers and spectators at the edge of their seats and a minor display of indiscipline ensued and soldiers were called to restore order.
Major Sebowe Nlegwa revealed to the SUNDAY STANDARD that this was the third year in a row he had experienced Logistics winning the tournament and was amazed by the talent that the volleyball teams had displayed.
The losers’ final was between 17 Amour Brigade and 2 Effect Brigade, with the former gaining 3rd place in the tournament.
