BFA prefers Sesinyi for NEC position

The Botswana Football Association National Executive Committee (BFA NEC) is planning to co-opt Senki Sesinyi into its fold.

Sesinyi is earmarked to plug the vacancy left by former member Pelotshweu Marshlow Motlogelwa who resigned from the BFA NEC in February early this year. His resignation came in the aftermath of a fallout over an alleged misuse of FIFA funds at the association. At the time of his resignation, he was serving as the BFA 1st vice president.

In a bid to plug the void left by Motlogelwa, the BFA NEC is now eyeing Sesinyi as his replacement. His appointment is however already dividing opinions as some believe the position should be voted for at the upcoming BFA general assembly.

Sesinyi was a member of current BFA president MaClean Letshwiti’s first NEC but decamped to an opposing faction before the last 2020 BFA elections. He was however defeated in the elections. It is believed that Sesinyi, who has since repaired relations with the BFA leadership will strategically assist in regions.

With the race for BFA NEC positions now ensuing, his co-opting into the NEC is also said to be a strategic move by the current BFA leadership to tap into his popularity with the regional structures.

“He is being brought in to assist the BFA president Letshwiti team in the campaigns that will be staged next year. The BFA NEC tenure of office is coming to an end next year and the BFA president will be seeking fresh mandate.”

“Sesinyi is believed to be in touch with the regions and is always with the regional leadership helping them. His proximity to the regions will be vital to the current leadership to retain its foothold in local football as he is expected to lure votes for him. It will also destabilise the Friends of Football faction,” said the sources.

The BFA regions will be going for elections this year where the winners will set the tone of which faction might win the BFA NEC elections next year. Sesinyi who is also owner of Double Action ladies football club is tipped to be given the role of overseeing women football.

With the announcement of the BFA annual general assembly date expected any time now, Sesinyi’s impending ascension to a role in the NEC is being questioned. Those who believe it should be left vacant for the BFA assembly to vote for the position believe co-opting someone ahead of the imminent assembly should not be allowed.

The say the position should be left vacant for all those who want to stand to show interest to be voted. There are also fears that the decision is likely to cause tensions between football people more so that the BFA elections always bring excitement and controversy.

Those who believe the position should be voted for want to do that in the next BFA general assembly to be staged sometime in August.
