BMD Youth League boycotts BNYC General Assembly

The Botswana Movement for Democracy Youth League ((BMDYL) has resolved to boycott the Botswana National Youth Council (BNYC) annual general assembly, which is scheduled for 31 August in Palapye.

Addressing the media in Gaborone on Monday, the BMDYL President Phenyo Segokgo said they came to this conclusion after the youth leagues of political parties were invited but were expected to pay for their expenses during the assembly.

Segokgo expressed shock that young politicians in their respective Youth Leagues have been requested to pay for their transportation, accommodation and meals during the assembly while all other stakeholders are being taken care of by the organisation.

He said this development is a clear indication that the organisation does not care about young politicians in this country.

Segokgo said the BNYC does not consider young politicians as partners in the development of the youth in the country.

“We, therefore, resolved not to attend the Assembly as we also believe the BNYC is a toothless dog that does not have a significant input in this country. The silence by the organisation when young people are reeling in absolute squalor, book allowance saga and skyrocketing unemployment is very disheartening to say the least,” said Segokgo. Reached for comment, the Executive Director of BNYC, Benjamin Raletsatsi, said their position so far was that his organization will cater for accommodation and transport for delegates only and political parties will only be extended an invitation.
