Botswana Tertiary Schools Sports Associations (BOTESSA)’s bid to improve school sports is continuing to gain momentum.
Fresh from their recent showing at 2022 Confederation of University and Colleges Sports Association (CUCSA) games which were held in Lilongwe, Malawi on the 29 August 2022 – 03 September 2022, BOTESSA is heading out again.
This time, they are headed to Kimberly to compete at the University Sports South Africa (USSA) Rugby 7s games. The games are scheduled to take place in Kimberley, South Africa starting this Friday, 23 to Sunday 25th September. The games will be hosted by Kimberley based Sol Plaatje University.
BOTESSA has sent both ladies and men’s Rugby 7s teams to the tournament. The two teams left the country this Tuesday (20 September) 2022 to take part in the above-mentioned games.
According to information from BOTESSA, Botswana’s invite to the games came ‘as a result of the bilateral proposal that the two countries made to the International University Sports Federation (FISU) to host developmental programmes on Rugby and the Marathon.
As part of this bilateral proposal, Botswana was given a go ahead to run ‘Run Maun Marathon’ while South Africa was to organise these Rugby tournaments. The Run Maun Marathon is scheduled to take place in Maun on the 29 October 2022.
Off the field of play, BOTESSA will be hoping to reap some long-term benefits from the tournament. According to BOTESSA, there will be a training workshop for BOTESSA Rugby officials facilitated by Rugby South Africa prior to the games.
