The Botswana government has not taken lightly utterance made by US President, Donald Trump that Haiti and African nations are “shithole countries”. Trump allegedly made the remarks during a meeting with a bipartisan group of senators at the White House, USA.
In response to the remarks, Botswana on Friday summoned US Ambassador to Botswana, Earl Miller to express its displeasure at the alleged utterances.
In a statement issued to the press, Botswana government said that it has since enquired from the US Government through Ambassador Miller, to clarify if Botswana is regarded as a “shithole” country given that there are Botswana nationals residing in the US, and also that some of Batswana may wish to visit the US.
“The Government of Botswana is wondering why President Trump, must use this descriptor and derogatory word, when talking about countries with whom the US has had cordial and mutually beneficial bilateral relations for so many years”, reads part of the statement from the Ministry of International Affairs & Cooperation.
The statement further stated the Botswana government’s desire for SADC, AU and all other progressive nations across the world to strongly condemn the remarks made by President Trump.
Meanwhile a congressional delegation from the USA is expected to visit Botswana at the end of this month. It is not clear whether and how the recent remarks made by Trump would affect the scheduled trip as well as the relations between Botswana and the US.
