Botswana faces potential massive data breach

Names and personal information of thousands of Batswana on the Department of Immigration and Citizenship database were exposed to theft in a best-case scenario and may have been stolen in a worst-case scenario.

The latest Auditor General’s report has revealed that a monitoring lapse may have exposed the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Border control system to a third-party data breach.

A data breach is a security violation, in which sensitive, protected or confidential data is copied, transmitted, viewed, stolen, altered or used by an individual unauthorized to do so.
