The world’s eyes will be on Botswana from 23rd to 26th September, as the country hosts the CITES Dialogue meeting on Trade in live African elephants. The meeting is strictly for range states. These are countries which host the African elephant known scientifically as Loxodonta Africana. In total there are about 32 countries in the continent designated as range states. But the key ones are Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Chad, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Southern African countries carry the bulk of the numbers of the African elephants, about 60 percent. Botswana is at the epicenter of the load with about 130 thousand elephants in the KAZA region alone. So it was appropriate that Botswana offer to host the summit which will take place in Maun, according to officials in the Ministry of Environment and Tourism. Most of the 32 countries have already confirmed their participation.
