Botswana, Namibia bromance: from use of IDs at boarders to swapping prisoners

In a move symbolizing the growing “bromance”, the governments of Botswana and Namibia are planning to formalise an agreement on the transfer of convicted offenders. This comes after the citizens of Botswana and Namibia have been granted the convenience of using their national IDs to cross the borders, eliminating the need for passports.

Dr. Daniel Kashikola, Namibia’s Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security, has since presented the motivation (Bill) for the ratification of the agreement to the National Assembly

He said the Transfer of Convicted Offenders Act, (Act No. 9 of 2005), provides for the transfer of convicted offenders between countries with Section 20 of the said act empowering the Minister responsible for the Correctional Service to enter into agreements on the transfer of convicted offenders, subject to the ratification of such agreement by the National Assembly.
