Botswana is facing a lawsuit which is currently pending before the African Union (AU) which was brought by the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa (IHRDA) in relation to allegations of sexual abuse of a child.
The Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa which works to promote awareness of human rights in Africa and improve the effectiveness of the African Human Rights System filed a case against Botswana before the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC). According to the organisation, the case relates to the continuous rape of a child between 2017 and 2020 by a prominent personality, with government of Botswana failing to investigate and prosecute the perpetrator.
