Polls conducted ahead of Zimbabwe’s general election suggested that the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) and opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) were neck and neck. However, those who have followed Zimbabwe’s electoral history for a long enough time couldn’t imagine a situation in which ZANU-PF, which controls the electoral process, could lose. A CCC win would have immediately put President Emmerson Mnangagwa and other ZANU-PF leaders in the same position that Ian Khama is in right this moment.
A CCC government would have wanted to investigate the “Gold Mafia”, a sanctions-busting, gold-smuggling operation that Mnangagwa, his wife and a senior ambassador are part of. This revelation was made in an explosive Al Jazeera documentary which is, hands down, the definition of first-rate investigative journalism.
