Botswana’s energy sector inches closer to self-reliance amid generation surge

Botswana’s energy narrative is shifting, as local electricity generation marked an 11.1 percent year-on-year increase in the third quarter of 2024. The Index of Electricity Generation (IEG) rose to 235.1, underscoring steady progress in reducing reliance on imports. Quarter-on-quarter growth was even more pronounced, with a 23.6 percent surge driven by improved performance at the flagship Morupule A and B power stations, which collectively contributed 98.1 percent of total output.
