Police in Maun are investigating a fatal car accident which occurred on Komana road towards Sehitwa village on Sunday morning, instantly claiming the life of a 13 month old baby. Superintendent John Kelebeng said the Toyota Hilux car which was driven by a 16 year old boy was laden with drums, all of which were filled with water. He said they suspect the driver might have lost control of the vehicle due to the weight of the drums as it slipped and eventually overturned. The toddler’s mother (25) and another passenger were treated and discharged the same day.
In another incident Kelebeng said they have arrested and detained a 19 year old man of Somelo who had on the morning of February 14th repeatedly chopped his 23 year old girlfriend with an axe following a misunderstanding. He noted that the woman, who was left for the dead is currently admitted at Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital, had sustained serious injuries on the left shoulder and head. Should he be found guilty, he said the man will be charged with unlawful wounding. Kelebeng said Somelo settlement which lies on the outskirts of Maun has a reputation of violence, adding however that the police will continue with their routine patrols of the area to monitor and ensure there is stability.
Kelebeng also decried about the increasing number of rape cases in his policing area. He stated that rape has become a common occurrence whereby the young and old are raped on daily basis, and in some instances by own family members. Although they are working at establishing the cause of all these, he said they have come to the realization that these occurrences might be fuelled by the fact that most households are led by minors who are for this reason vulnerable to all social ills.
