Centre Chiefs hierarchy irked as Galenamotlhale’s seletion issue boils over

The Mochudi Centre Chiefs hierarchy has been left incensed at what they deem insensitive comments attributed to the Zebras National team coach, Peter Butler. In what has been an ongoing end of season saga regarding the selection or non selection thereof of MCC midfielder Lesego Galenamothale into the national team, Butler is quoted by one of the local newspapers as questioning the selection of the said player as the beMobile Player of the Season. According to an article in this week’s The Echo newspaper, Butler is alleged to have said ‘Galenamotlhale does not deserve to be the footballer of the year.’ The article has since irked the ire of the Centre Chiefs hierarchy, who took to their Facebook page to condemn what they call a ‘Disgraceful Act.’

“We have read with dismay and shock in today’s Echo newspaper that the national team coach is quoted as saying that Lesego Galenamotlhale does not deserve to be the Footballer of the year. This revelation is shocking and disrespectful to the Magosi family and Football lovers in general. The conduct of the national team coach should be condemned with the utmost contempt as this does not build but destroy players whose livelihood is football,” the Facebook page comment read. In a strong worded comment on their page, the Centre Chiefs hierarchy said the national team coach’s words can only be ‘attributed to some hate and discriminatory tendencies and biasness.’ Reached for comment, Centre Chiefs Public Relations Officer (PRO), Clifford Mogomotsi, confirmed the statement, saying it was the official stand of the club in regards to what is developing into a prolonged off season saga.

“We will be writing a letter to the Botswana Football Association (BFA) to register our displeasure with this and ask them to have a word with the coach. As a club, we are trying to develop players and comments like these, more especially from those with leadership positions like the national team coach are not helping,” Mogomotsi said.

According to Mogomotsi, as a leader, the national team coach should have acted with discretion when commenting on the issue and not uttered comments that could destroy ‘a young player such as Galenamotlhale.’ He said while the Centre Chiefs hierarchy has not even at once questioned the selection of players into the national team, the statement has left them wondering whether Butler has anything against their players. “We are not saying Galenamotlhale or any other player should be called into the national team. All we are saying is the coach should not at any time utter words that can destroy the careers of players,” the Centre Chiefs PRO said.

Mogomotsi said if it is true that Butler uttered the words he is said to have said, that will be an act of disrespect, not only to the coaches who selected Galenamotlhale as the beMobile Player of the Season, but also top the country’s football loving people who selected him as the Supporters’ Player of the Season. Once their concern with the BFA has been registered, Mogomotsi said they will be hoping for the mother body to act with the same decisiveness they had been doing when dealing with issues this year.
