The Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) has sought assistance from Interpol, the International Police, to trace the whereabouts of the former boss of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) General Manager, Xiaming Wang, who apparently skipped the country recently after he was charged with attempting to bribe the former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Infrastructure, Science and Technology, Carter Murupisi, with a cash amount of P250 000.
The DCEC insists, however, that they cannot take the blame for Xiaming’s disappearance.
Information reaching The Telegraph suggests that Xiaming is suspected to be hiding somewhere in neighbouring Zambia where he might be working for one of the biggest construction companies there as Zambia is experiencing a construction boom.
“We have asked Interpol to assist us to trace Xiaming’s whereabouts although we suspect where he is holed up,” said Lentswe Motshoganetsi, the Public Relations Officer of the DCEC. “We were just simply complying with the court order that allowed or gave him permission to go for his medical checkups outside the country as per bail conditions.”
Motshoganetsi stated that this was not the first time that the DCEC had given Wang his travel documents to go for his medical checkups outside the country yet he always returned the documents to the DCEC.
“All is not lost because his house in Tlokweng, worthy over P3 million, has been forfeited to the state,” he said.
Motshoganetsi added that the state had also taken cash amounting to P250 000 that the suspect had wanted to bribe the former Permanent Secretary with.
He said that once Xiaming is located by Interpol, he will be arrested and extradited to Botswana to answer to his criminal charges.
“So far,” revealed Motshoganetsi, “Xiaming is the only Chinese national that the DCEC is on a manhunt for.”
