Sunday Standard investigations have turned up fresh information suggesting that the US Joe Biden administration may have pressured President Mokgweetsi Masisi to cancel a scheduled official visit to Botswana by Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov earlier this year.
Botswana government internal correspondence which has been leaked to the Sunday Standard has revealed that President Masisi had agreed to host President Putin’s emissary and the government enclave was mobilized to prepare for the visit.
A savingram signed by Morati Molelekeng on behalf of Private Secretary to the President responding to a previous savingram from the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informing the ministry Masisi’s planned visit and courtesy call by Lavrov has been passed to the Sunday Standard.
