Ghetto Yankees thrashed all that came their way this past weekend to mark the start of the 2016 / 17 Botswana Softball Association (BSA)’s the 2016/17 Bofinet Softball League season.
Yankees men and women teams dropped no points as they both played two games each, winning them all.
In the first game of the new season, Yankees ladies beat hosts Sua Raiders 16-10 before beating Comets 12- 10 in a tightly fought game that was decided by a tie break.
The result pleased Yankees Ladies’ Coach Telly Rasesigo, who said the results are a reflection of what they have been striving to achieve since the team was formed.
“I am so impressed with my girls’ results. They showed character against the best teams we have in this Zone. We are a small team and we are not expecting anything beyond our potential but we are trying to show our presence and prove our capability in the league,” he said.
“My players went into the game on the right state of mind┬áand they were physically fit. We were working on the pitching and batting┬áall week long to get familiar with the dynamics and tactics of our game plan. That is one more important aspect of the game,” added Rasesigo.
He further stated that they want to be good ambassadors of Francistown in the softball fraternity and also to be center of development in order to groom and produce the best players who can represent the country at national level.
“The team is dominated by young junior and senior school players because that’s where I train them and later recruit them to our team which plays in the league so as to give them exposure while they are still young. I am a teacher in a junior school in Francistown and that’s why our team chemistry is of high level because I know them very well we have a relationship that i attribute to our success,” he explained.
In the men’s games, Ghetto Yankees demolished┬áSua Raiders 15-0 in a game watched by a massive home crowd. The team then beat Comets 12-10 to emulate their ladies’ side.
The games were used to officially launch the 2016/17 Bofinet Softball League season. The launch was held in Sowa Town on Saturday.
Bofinet is sponsoring the Softball League to a tune of P1.5 million for the entire season. The winners of the league title, both men and women, will walk away with P100 000.00 each.
Meanwhile the southern zone league is scheduled to kick start this coming Saturday in Gaborone. The games, which are scheduled to be played at the National diamond grounds, will feature teams like Wells, BDF, Gatalamotho and Police.
