At the instance of his lawyers President Ian Khama has aborted his plans to reinstate suspended Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) secretary general Gomolemo Motswaledi and instead the two will slug it out in court, close sources have revealed.
Sunday Standard can confirm that by yesterday midnight Motswaledi camp and Khama camp had agreed that a court action against the party be avoided.
Motswaledi camp agreed but insisted that it could only happen on condition that Motswaledi was reinstated unconditionally.
Motswaledi has filed a case against his party challenging his suspension from the party and subsequent recall as the party’s parliamentary candidate at Gaborone Central.
It is understood that Khama was supposed to prepare a statement to formally announce Motswaledi’s reinstatement. However, by Wednesday morning it was clear that the deal had fallen through.
It is not clear as to what foiled plans to reinstate Motswaledi, however Sunday Standard can confirm that the party’s warring factions are meeting behind the scenes to broker a last minute political solution.
Meanwhile following the failed bid to avert courtroom confrontation Motswaledi and Khama will today meet at the Lobatse High Court when the case launched by Motswaledi commences for hearing.
“We will hear from them when we get to court,” said one of Motswaledi’s legal team.
