Lights, Camera….. Nostalgia

Botswana Craft has done it again, they have reunited popular late 1990s South African Kwaito group TKZEE who are set to perform at the Mascom Live Session 2017 grand finale scheduled for December 15th 2017 at Botswana Craft. They pulled it off three years ago when they brought the Afro pop quartet, Bongo Maffin to perform at one of the Mascom Live Sessions.

This trio comprised of three high school friends Tokollo Tshabalala (T), Kabelo Mabalane (K) and Zwai Bala (ZEE) was catapulted to fame when they released a single titled ‘Phalafala’ in December 1997. This song sampled Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow and went on to be a huge success and managed to sell up to 100,000 units.

In 1998 the trio continued with their magic and released yet another hit single Shibobo, they featured South Africa’s then top striker, Benni Mc Carthy and with this song they had sampled United Kingdom’s pop group Europe, The Final Countdown.

Later in the year 1998 they released the album which was titled Halloween, this album was comprised of a series of club bangers and chart toppers like ‘Dlala Mapantsula, Mambotjie and We Love This Place.’ It was this album that won TKZEE four South African Music Awards (SAMAs) for Best Kwaito Album, Best Duo/ Group, Best Single and Best Kwaito Single.

The highlight of their career had to have been when they were invited to perform their hit singe Shibobo during the opening ceremony of the 2010 FIFA World Cup which was hosted by South Africa.

As the trio further diversified their sound they brought on board more South African artists to form the TKZEE Family, they have since parted ways and pursued relatively successful solo careers but will be back to share a stage once again in Botswana.

If you were sneaking out of your parent’s house for a good time in the late 1990s and early 2000s it is time to polish your dancing shoes and get ready to get down. So all those in their thirties, this festival is definitely for you.

TKZEE will not be alone at this show, local young and talented HanceFord Magapatona, Han C will also be performing. Han C released his first singe in 2015 titled Sedi Laaka featuring Crispin the Drummer and Team Distant. His vocal aptitude can further be witnessed in his current single Se ileng which is enjoying a lot of air play on all local radio stations

A press release from Botswana Craft states that, “This will be the 40th Mascom Live Session “#seasonshutdown” is on scheduled for Friday 15th December at Botswanacraft.  Mascom Live Sessions were started in 2011 with the aim of partnering local and foreign artists to share the stage.  The idea being that through sharing culture with others we could develop and create memorable moments of magic and love.”
