Mafolofolo kick off season with big win

Mafolofolo ladies Volleyball team kicked off the season with a 3 ÔÇô 1 victory against BDF VI at Ditshupo hall in Gaborone on Saturday.

Mafolofolo ladies team head coach Kabo Ntshinogang says despite losing the first set of their opening game against BDF VI, he expressed satisfaction with the performance of the team.

“Winning the first game of the season is key for us because we usually gauge ourselves with the opening game. The game was not easy more especially the first set, that’s where we encountered some difficulties against BDF and we were wary of the threat that they were posing since they beat us in the pre season,” he said.

After losing the first set, Mafolofolo, commonly known as ‘Motheo wa Tsotlhe’ in the volleyball circles, made a spectacular comeback to win the second set which they led from the word go ending the Army girl’s electrifying form they exhibited in the first set.

Lizzy Gasekgonwe and Kelebogile Mahupela took full responsibility and stabilised the team with their much needed experience leading the team to a 3-1 victory.

Ntshinogang further stated that the absence of their Center blocker, Tsholofelo Reatshabile, due to social problems dented the team’s performance because they were forced to shuffle positions in order to fill up Retshabile’s gap.

“Players ended up not playing in their respective positions because i was trying to close the gap. That is why the team chemistry was not perfect. We couldn’t attack in the middle like we always do, our service and block was not good which contributed much in our defence, that’s why BDF troubled us,” he added.

After beefing up their squad off season, they are hoping for a top notch performance that will lead them to League victory.

Coach Ntshinogang stated that they need to improve in block and service going into the next games which he believes will give his team shape and stability.

In another interesting game played on Sunday, Kutlwano Ladies team registered their first win of the season following their 3-2 win against Kalavango in a hard fought match that was played in front of an electrifying crowd at Ditshupo hall.

The defending champion suffered a major setback after losing their 4 key players to other teams in and outside the country including their star player Tracy Chaba who is currently playing in Egypt.
