Meet Malope, a business community builder

Until he emerged as one of the recipients of Gabz FM/Mail and Guardian Change Makers award winner under leadership and Business category, only a few knew about Mokganedi Malope’s versatility

Malope, born on the 13th October 1980 in Gabane is an entrepreneur from the dusty village, located some17 kilometers South West of the capital Gaborone; who started business at the age of 24 years. Now nearing 38 years of age, Malope is the Founder and Chairman of Gabane Youth Business Pitso; an initiation whose mandate is to encourage the spirit of entrepreneurship among the youth and to give exposure to those already in business. The debut event was held last year

In an interview inside his twin-cab van recently, he revealed that empowering the youth gives him joy. He had with him several documents from the youth from Gabane who were asking for assistance.

“I try my level best to give support where I can,” said Malope. He decried the fact that there seems to be very little assistance done by the institutions who are supposed to be supporting aspiring entrepreneurs. This leads to discouragement of those with limited or no resources. Malope echoes sentiments by several entrepreneurs who emphasize the fact that not everyone can be an entrepreneur. He opined that the best approach to empower the youth would be to let the aspirants and beneficiaries undergo internship or attachments to get first hand information on the field they intend investing in. He said as Youth Pitso they value training and education. No wonder they paid for tutorial service for their ushers who were doing Form five last year. One of the beneficiaries will be testifying about the benefits of the tutorials.

“We are as Youth Business Pitso preparing for our second event, scheduled for the 27th January. Last year’s was well attended by different stakeholders and both the youth and adults attended. This year’s theme is ‘Starting and staying in business’. There will be speakers who will be testifying how their small businesses benefited from the past Pitso. Many indeed got exposure and they have gone somewhere businesswise,” he said.
