Mexican Girls Football Club emerged champions of Kweneng Regional Football Women tournament dubbed Tic-LekMoMas which was held over the weekend at Gaborone West Junior Secondary School. This was after Makufa and Mexican Girls advanced to the finals after they knocked out Sikalekeke and Mvela in the semifinals which took place the same day. However Mexican girls emerged the winners of the inaugural tournament after they stunned Makufa FC by a goal to nil.
Delliote and Devine football clubs lost the chase to the Tic-LekMoMas championships in the early stages of the tourney against the top four teams that qualified for the semi-finals.
In the first game of the semis, Mexican Girls won by eight to two goals over Mvela , Sikalekeke lost 3 ÔÇô 2 against Makufa to make it to the finals. Mvela beat Sikalekeke by a single goal in the losers final. In an interview with the representatives of the organisers, Oaitse Moeti told The Telegrah Sport that the tournament went according to plan.
“Everything went according to plan and the tournament has achieved its intended purpose. We hope to have a similar tournament in the future when the league is on break,” said Moeti.
He explained that their Kweneng region has six teams making the league to be short hence they came up with the idea of the tournament to prolong competition. “We wanted our clubs to be active and motivated to continue competing because without competition they can be discouraged and end up leaving the sport,” said Moeti.
He observed that there are only ten games played in ten months. He explained that they got financial support from individuals in the region. “The Kweneng Women Football Committee sourced financial support from individuals in the Kweneng Regional Football Executive committee. Those who contributed are Tico Kamati, Lekgotla Raditlokwa, Malebogo Moloi and Onkemetse Masena and they pledged P500 and the tournament was named after them (Tic-LekMoMas) to make a tune of P2000 sponsorship,” Moeti explained.
The Mexicans won gold medals and a trophy, while Makufa who are the runners up received silver medals and position three were given bronze medals. Trophies were awarded to individual players who excelled during the competition. Young player of the tournament was awarded to Atlang Bafitlhile, Player of the tournament went to Esa Galekhutle, the goalkeeper of the tournament was taken by Malebogo Leposwa and the top goal scorer went to Lorato Motlogelwa.
