Miss Botswana 2022/23 Lesego Chombo’s Beauty with a Purpose project campaign was officially set in motion early February with intense preparation behind the scenes to pave the way for an execution that is set to leave a lasting impact beyond her reign.
Miss Botswana paid a Visit this week (Tuesday 21 February 2023) to Maothate settlement, a Village far from all amenities with the nearest sign of civilization being the Thebephatswe army base camp that is 18k’s away.
Maothate is defined by Rife unemployment and under resourced families where 3 meals a day is considered a luxury. The Maothate Learning Centre where Miss Botswana spent her day with the community was first established to aid adults by teaching them how to read and write in order to better their quality of life in some manner.
Later Maothate Learning Centre was extended to become a learning facility for children to mitigate the root cause of the poverty that has struck the village… Lack of education.
Maothate Learning Centre envisions a community that will one day be removed from the firm grip of generational poverty. Our Miss Botswana on her visit not only played and interacted with the children but also showed her true village girl roots by stirring the Pots over open fire with the elders of the community.
The Maothate settlement resonates with the true purpose of Miss Chombo’s Beauty with a purpose, the project is aimed at shaping the lives of children from underprivileged communities by educating them about opportunities that could be available to them. The problem is better solved when the root cause is treated.
And this is what “The Genesis” is here to do. LESEGO CHOMBO ON HER PROJECT The Genesis Project aims to create a conducive environment for the development of economically disadvantaged children through a developmental program that equips their parents with the skills and behavioral attributes that are necessary in promoting their children’s emotional, social and cognitive well-being.
Ultimately, this project aims to bridge the gap between the environment that children in rural and poverty stricken homes grow up in versus that in economically stable and urban homes. The program is co-facilitated by stakeholders such as Psychologists, Teachers, Pediatricians and Social Welfare professionals whose role is to impart accurate and sustainable knowledge on these parents.
As part of my project, I have also hosted developmental outings for economically disadvantaged children in Maun comprising of specialist medical checks, educational activities, and introduction to artistry, the goal of which was to expose the children to a conducive environment and shape their perspective.
