My Star finalists leave judges spell-bound

Kennedy, Elizabeth and Bianca – the finalists in the local talent searching musical show, left the judges and the audience alike calling for more as they dished out all their best ahead of the grand finale slated for this Friday night.

The trio beat the other remaining contenders on Friday to take over the helm with the winner expected to emerge at the looming show. The judges have hailed My Star 2011 the best performance they have presided over since inception in 2007.

As Kennedy- the only male contender- left the stage, Kgomotso for her part remarked: “I have all along told myself I would not shed any tears but your performance defied my strength. That was a brilliant performance. Keep it up.”

Overwhelmed by each of the their stunning performances, DJ Sid, who in the previous sessions had to use the sides of the coin to determine his vote amid a tough contest, was lost for words, only saying: “I would not care who wins this performance. The performance you have all given us today was fabulous- the best contest we have ever seen since the inception of the show.”

Master Dee would also not contain himself, reiterating his all time sentiments in which the voters cast the votes in friendship and favour patterns and not based on the talent portrayed by the prospective singers.

“Your destiny lies with the voters there. Like I have said before, this voting system needs to be interogated to see where it could be corrected. Your future is thus in the hands of the public who may send votes to their favourite contenders. So we will not be there on Friday to save you as this would be the finale,” said Master Dee who has seen, on several occasions, the best contenders being thrown out of the race purely because of the voting system while the worst performers remained in the show.

Together, they would at times use their veto to save some of the performers they deemed fit to continue in the show, despite the public votes.

Starting six months ago, My Star 2011 saw the contenders go through a rigorous process in which they sang songs, especially popular songs of renowned artists accompanied by task songs in which they would either be given lyrics or instruments to test their musical prowess.

Many were left behind while others, like Kelvin and Norman, the two male promising contenders that wooed the crowd, still resonate in the public minds because of their sterling performances.

The duo was ejected from the show – thanks to the cockeyed voting system, which judges said should this time around be subjected to heavy scrutiny.

Starting from a humble beginning of P10 000 cash prize, this year’s show will see the finalist walk away with a P1000,000 cash prize plus P150 000 worth of surprise goodies while the runners up awards still remain shrouded in secrecy.

Pioneered by Master Dee, a former musician, and DJ Sid, the show looks set for greater heights with the prize money getting bigger and bigger every year and with its popularity amongst the youths also increasing.
