Botswana Congress Party President and Member of Parliament for Gaborone Central, Dumelang Saleshando, has pronounced his party’s support for Bakgatla Paramount Chief Kgafela Kgafela II’s court bid for a Constitutional review.
Addressing a BCP rally in Francistown over the weekend, Saleshando said it was high time that chiefs were given more power in the control of their people.
“BCP fully supports Kgafela in his fight for the constitution to be reviewed in order to accommodate chiefs to have more power in the control of their people but I can only disagree if he wants to separate Kgatleng from the rest of the country,” he said.
Saleshando added that he would also not agree if Kgafela wants to abuse his powers over his people, but maintained that the constitution with regard to chiefs over their people needs to be re-looked at. He added that “government’s decision to de-recognize Kgafela as a Chief of Bakgatla is questionable and I am still going to meet with Kgafela over these issues”.
Saleshando then went on to attack President Ian Khama saying that it is high time that he learnt to address issues through dialogue rather than making unilateral decisions. He blamed the President for bringing the country into shambles, adding that during the two months public workers strike, the president refused dialogue with the unions, but instead he chose to address prisoners.
Saleshando said that BDP is dying and called on opposition parties to work hard on the opposition cooperation initiative to unseat it from power. He lashed out at the ruling party, saying that it does not have democratic principles as it is only controlled by a single individual.
