Police nab suspects in the killing of businessman

Four men accused of killing a businessman recently in Block Six were arraigned before Village Magistrate Court on Thursday facing murder and robbery charges.

The accused persons are Kitso Staka, Bonno Mokgophe Onkabetse Mogotsi and Kitso Seeiso.

The four men who are Batswana are accused of killing an Indian national Jinesh Naik in Block 6, Gaborone on the 7 October.

State Prosecutor Christinah Ramokwena told the Magistrate Court on Thursday that the matter is still fresh adding that investigations are still ongoing.

She requested the Court that the suspects’ guilty plea be reserved. Ramokwena further urged the court to remand the accused persons in custody pending police investigations.

”Right now the accused persons pose some element of danger and they are likely to temper with investigations if they were to be released on bail. Therefore I urge the court to remand them in custody until next mention, said Ramokwena. 

One of the accused persons who represented himself, Kitso Staka asked the court to release him on bail saying that he would not interfere with state investigations. Other accused person said they would apply for bail after police investigations are complete.

According to the charge sheet the four accused had robbed and murdered Jinesh Naik at gun point at his parents’ house in Block Six.  They walked away with valuable items in the excesses of over P200 000 among them Gold bangles worth P60 000, Gold wedding rings valued at P70 000 and Gold Pendant with beads worth P50 000.

In his ruling, Chief Magistrate Mompati Taolo said the accused had committed a serious offence and should not simply be released on bail while investigations are still ongoing.

Therefore he ordered that the accused to be reminded in custody until 21 November.
