Prosecution seeks Interpol help over Somali convict on the run

The case in which Adam Abdi Mahommed, a Somali refugee, was convicted of rape is far from over as Mahommed failed to show up on the day of sentencing at the Francistown Magistrate Court on Friday.

The prosecutor in the matter informed Regional Magistrate, Lorraine Makati Lesang, that he had decided to furnish Interpol with the information on the convict to help locate and arrest him.

“We have issued a warrant of arrest for Mahommed and, with the help of Interpol, we hope to locate and arrest him soon,” he told court.

Mahommed was found guilty of rape last month and never showed up in court to hear his fate.
Information reaching Sunday Standard is that the convict skipped the country into neighbouring South Africa.

Mahommed was charged of raping a minor between 2003 and 2006 at the Dukwi Refugee Camp in the Central District.

The convict has continuously refuted the charge in court, saying that he was framed by fellow Somalis merely because he turned to Christianity.
