The arrival back into the country of former president Ian Khama with just over a month to go before elections should make rich pickings for an opposition that as a collective were already struggling to get their campaigns off the ground.

It is an extraordinary state of affairs. President Mokgweetsi Masisi will spend this weekend having kittens on just how to handle Khama’s arrival and also trying to figure out exactly what that return means for the ruling party’s fortunes at the polls next month.
Masisi’s situation will not be helped by the fact that the country is hurting from an economy that is on an altogether unchartered territory – with reserves at Bank of Botswana having been depleted to unprecedented low levels.
