Gaborone rugby club will play host to long distance athletes and mountain bike cyclers this weekend at the first ever series of the Scania/Ultimate Cycle Base Duathlon race of the year.
The duathlon which started yesterday (Saturday) is expected to end today (Sunday) at the Gaborone Rugby Club. It will be the first out of a total of four series of cycling and long distance running sporting events to be co-hosted by Scania Botswana and Ultimate Cycle Base for this year.
The duathlon started with the first leg being a run which was held yesterday (Saturday). It is comprised of three categories. There is the 21 km run for senior contenders, the 10km run for amateurs as well as the 5km kids’ race. Today (Sunday) will be the second leg of the duathlon Mountain bike challenge, which has four categories being the 63 km cycle followed by the 42 km, 31 km and 5km kids’ cycle respectfully.
Race organiser, Alida Steigling of Ultimate Cycle Base (UCB) says this is more than just a calendar sports event. She emphasised that that the seamless use of the latest timing technology brings a new level of convenience and performance to race timing and results. “UCB Timing uses the state-of-the-art Jaguar 4.0 disposable chip timing system, providing participants and organisers with accurate results.”
Steigling noted that the x-series duathlon is not just a sporting event. “It is also meant to test athletes fitness levels because we have realised that most corporates don’t get up to much physical exercise.” She further added that she expects the duathlon to attract hordes of sports enthusiasts from Gaborone and surrounding areas. “Great races don’t just happen, they require great ideas, careful planning, and attention to detail,” she said.
