Soul Food Comedy returns bigger in season three

They have successfully hosted many comedy events which included bringing one of Africa’s biggest comedians, Ugandan based Anne Kansiime. She managed to sell out all her shows, a first for a stand-up comedy event locally. This year’s Soul Food comedy promises to bring more exciting shows that will not only thrill but will surprise many.

Organiser Karabo Musa said they have now started auditions for the season 3 show where aspiring comedians will battle it out on stage for the ultimate price of being crowned the king of comedy.

“Soul Food Events have begun planning a comedy tour for September which will include shows in Francistown, Gaborone and South Africa (SA). The third season will first involve a selection process for the comedians and our target is to attract 25 comedians to the auditions,” she said.

Musa said that the first leg of auditions began this past Saturday and the response they got from the comedians and public at large was amazing. “So many comedians came to try their luck and so far I am glad to state that our comedy circle is growing in leaps and bounds each day and those who came last year also came eager to impress the judges,” she said.

She said that the best three comedians who will manage to beat others during the competition will tour with Anne Kansiime in SA. She said this will boost their performance as comedians on stage as they will be learning techniques and skills from the queen of comedy.

“In coming up with the event, the founders felt that it was upon them to help local comedians reach new heights which their talents deserved. Season one and two attracted more than 10 comedians in the 2014 finals so this year we have increased the number to 25,” she said.

She said that after the auditions, the competition is separated into three rounds of comedy where comedians are tested with different challenges helping the judges decide the best all round standup comedian.

“We have had five celebrity roasts, usually the last round on event night where comedians will be making fun of them. Celebrities who have been involved so far include Bonni Dintwa, DJ Sid, A.T.I, Ozi F Teddy and Nijel Amos. We have plans to roast more local celebrities in 2015,”Musa said.
