The Steinmetz Gaborone Marathon has received a major financial boost from Stanbic Bank Botswana following the bank’s decision to become a Diamond Sponsor for the annual run-for-charity event.
The bank’s Managing Director, Leina Gabaraane, said that they want to be relevant in the society, not only by making profits, but by also contributing ‘to the society we operate in’ by promoting good living and healthy society.
“We have been doing it (activities that promote good living and good health),” Gabaraane said on Tuesday at the presentation of P280, 000 sponsorship cheque. “We are also raising funds for the underprivileged.”
He added that the bank believes in good health and exercising.
The bank’s Head of Corporate and Investment Banking, Tasha Ferreira, said this was the first time Stanbic is sponsoring the event and added that the event gives them the chance to choose the charity of their choice.
“As a Corporate and Investment Bank, we are closely aligned to the diamond mining and downstream industry in Botswana. Hence our decision to become a Diamond sponsor is of this event,” Ferreira said. “The marathon is a great charity sporting event and we at Stanbic Bank feel honoured to be the Diamond sponsor.
He added: “Hopefully, we shall see the cooperation going forward.”
The bank is offering registration at its branches across the country and it will offer free registration to its staff and a P2, 000 prize for first bank employee finishing in any of the four races.
The marathon will take place on May 5, 2013 and it functions as an international qualifier for the major races and Botswana’s largest running- for- charity event. The event will take place at Grand Palm Resort and will be offering 4 races, namely: the Marathon ÔÇô 42.2 km, half marathon- 21 km, 10 km and fun run/walk ÔÇô 4 km.
The organiser of the marathon, Stellan Bengtsson, said race registration is ongoing and encouraged runners to register as space is limited.
“Registration can be done in all Stanbic bank branches and Steinmetz Gaborone Marathon offices. We are truly excited to kick off this year’s marathon and excited to be partnering with Stanbic Bank to bring this event to life,” Bengtsson said.
