Tati Nickel in historic laboratory accreditation from SANAS

Tati Nickel Mining Company (TNMC) last week made yet another milestone as it became the first mine in Botswana to get its analytical laboratory accredited by the South African Accreditation Systems (SANAS) in line with required international standards.

Speaking during the accreditation ceremony, a representative of SANAS, Linda Grundingh, commended Tati Nickel Phoenix Analytical Laboratory for achieving such a success, adding that SANAS is proud to be associated with the mine’s laboratory.

“The success of any system depends on the commitment of the people responsible for the implementation and we feel privileged to be part of this event to recognize them for their hard work and commitment,” she said.

She said that through this accreditation process, the Tati Nickel Laboratory will impart confidence in customers that it has the necessary competencies to produce meaningful and credible results.
She also commended her organization saying that SANAS is able to perform its role as an accreditor and went on to add that it is due to the fact that it forms part of the mutual recognition arrangement of the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC).

“This ultimately helps to reduce some technical barriers to trade and through the ILAC Arrangement, the foundation for realizing the ideal of having products tested once or accepted everywhere has been established,” she said.

Grundigh said that the recognition does not only allow the mine’s Analytical Laboratory to facilitate trade, but it also plays a major role in the protection of health, safety and the environment. She went on to add that the achievement by the mine laboratory has earned it a position amongst all the accredited facilities worldwide of which Botswana can take pride of. She encouraged TNMC to make sure that the facility maintains its standard, especially through its competence.

“Like all things worth fighting for, it is not only about the achievement, but maintenance is very important,” she said.

The South African National Accreditation Systems (SANAS) is recognized by the South African Government as the single National Accreditation Body that gives formal recognition that Laboratories, Certification Bodies, Inspection Bodies, Proficiency Testing Scheme Providers and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) test facilities are competent to carry out specific tasks. It has done other accreditations to different countries in Africa.
