The University of Botswana was last Tuesday was the venue of the first Southern Chops Sports Associations (SCSA) athletic games, sponsored by Wimpy.
The games were part of giving back to the community, a bid which saw P10 000 being made available for medals, a trophy and golf t-shirts. Competing teenage athletes showed a lot of zeal in their performance in the covered categories of 60m, 100m, 110m, 150m, 200m, 400m and 800m. There were also two relay categories:  4 x 50m and 4 x 100m.
“We are happy to partner with the SCSA in developing sport in Botswana; we hope that our sponsorship will help to inspire up and coming athletes to give their best and, hopefully, one day they will compete in the Olympics,” said Joseph Makuyana, Wimpy Marketing Manager.
He said private schools in Botswana, known mostly for achieving high academic standards, are set to change as they take sports seriously.
“There are also sports codes which private schools are known for like cricket and rugby, so running gives the students opportunity to use their natural ability. Unlike other sports codes which demand skill and technicality, running can be done by everyone. So we were doing this to ensure that many partake in this, for their sake,” said Justice Dipeba, SCSA chairman.
The competition comprised eight private primary schools from the southern part of Botswana: Baobao, Botlhale, Broadhurst, Crescent, Legae, Raserura, Westwood, and Thornhill, the eventual winners on the day.
