Time to ignore the doom-mongering climate change crowd

The climate is a very complicated phenomenon. That being the case, there is still a lot that even the best and brightest scientists have not mastered about the climate because it is a natural system whose behaviour is hard to predict. Thus there is no need to speak in such a matter-of-fact manner about something which much remains unknown.

Unfortunately there is a lot of doom-mongering by climate change activists, the majority of whom are not scientists. Even if they were accomplished scientists, they would still have to appreciate that the behaviour of the planet and its climate is pretty complex stuff.

Take the Evening standard last week. The UK paper screamed that other day without offering any proof whatsoever that “The world is already seeing increasing floods, storms, heatwaves and wildfires as a result of climate change, and beyond 1.5C of warming, more extreme weather, crop damage and losses of key systems such as coral reefs are expected”.

The article did not bother to offer evidence demonstrating how climate change caused increasing floods, heatwaves and wildfires. At times, it feels as if while climate change people claim to be sages of science, are under no compulsion to provide evidence to back up their claims.

The climate is complex. This is why it is difficult for meteorologists to speak with precision, for example, on when it is going to rain and by how much. If you were to ask a weatherman today on what day it is going to rain in December next year or the year after, they will, to be fair to them, not be in a position to provide an accurate answer.

Last week our very own department of meteorology issued an advisory about heavy rains that were expected over that weekend. The rains occurred as predicted. The same advisory also mentioned the possibility of floods in some areas, which thankfully did not happen. In fairness to them, the meteorology people did not say that we were going to experience floods but rather referred to the possibility of that happening. This just goes to show that there are a lot unknowns about that climate that humans have to unearth. It also points to the continuing need for painstaking research and diligence so that we get to a point where can begin to speak with reasonable certainty about the behaviour of the climate. Tragically however, this is a point that is lost on many environmentalists and climate change activists. They are in too much of a hurry to politicise climate science for the sole purpose of controlling our lives.

At the tip of spear being used to assault our liberties lies the United Nations. It is a pity that every now and then , a body which established to promote peace , economic growth , creation of jobs and lifting people out of poverty , has as its overriding agenda the so called green agenda and spreading doom about some existential threat to the planet as a result of man-made climate change. It is sad that now the UN is at the forefront of efforts to rid the world of fossil fuels when these catapulted the world into the very high standards of living that many people in the world especially the West now enjoy.

It is therefore totally unnecessary that we are being frogmarched to forego the imperative of using fossil fuels to lift people out of poverty just on the altar of climate change. We just have to ignore this crowd.

And while we are there, may I wish you well as we celebrate the most sacred of holidays for Christianity, namely Easter.
