Tomato Production thrives in Ngamiland

Farmers in Ngamiland have taken advantage of the ever increasing demand from the tourism industry to launch a thriving tomato production industry.

This emerged during a tour of agro-production facilities in the region by Assistant Minister of Agricultural Development & Food Security Beauty Manake.

The farmers told the Assistant Minister that they managed grow their operations through the assistance of government agencies and parastatals like the CEDA, LEA and NDB. Apart from tomatoes, the farmers also produce high value crops like green pepper and lettuce.

The farmers were also able to ramp up production through the assistance of OKACOM, which provided climate-smart agriculture infrastructure like shade nets and irrigation systems. This enhanced production and facilitated linkages with the local market and the higher up-market tourism value chain.
