A Block 7 resident in Gaborone last week shot and injured a trespasser who broke into his house and tried to steal P15 000 worth of goods.
The injured intruder is currently fighting for his life under police guard at Princess Marina hospital, while the house owner is assisting police with investigations.
Superintendent King Tshebo of Sir Seretse Khama Airport police confirmed the incident on Monday, saying that the intruder was shot after breaking into the house at night, while the house owner and his family were asleep.
Tshebo said that the owner told them that he was woken by suspicious noises at night, and he collected his firearm to investigate. In the process he encountered the intruder, who was in the process of making away with house hold goods valued at P 15 000, and shot him on sight.
After the shooting, the intruder’s companion, who was with him in the house, pulled him away and later called his friends, who came to pick him up and take him to the hospital.
The hospital management later alerted the police, who then started investigations.
Although the matter is still under investigation, Tshebo said the house owner may not be charged, depending on the outcome of the investigations.
He further said that they are still seeking advice on whether they can also charge the person who transported the injured intruder to hospital as an accomplice.
According to Tshebo, block 7 and block 8 are crime infested areas, and house breakings have been on the rise at the two areas over the last two years.
Some of the house breakings resulted in fatalities, while some house owners were injured.
