Two drowned fishermen recovered from Lake Xhau

The bodies of two fishermen who hail from Kedia Village in Boteti were recovered from Lake Xhau in Boteti area during the weekend after they drowned in the lake.

The two are believed to have drowned while fishing in a Mokoro (dugout canoe).

Orapa Police Station Commander, Superintendent Kabo Badirwang, confirmed that the two are suspected to have drowned while trying to put up a fishing net in the lake that started flowing in 2010 after decades of dry spell.

Badirwang indicated that they received a report about the drowning of the two men who were in the company of another who was not in the lake.  He said that after receiving a report of Thursday last week they asked for assistance from the Botswana Defence Force to help in the search for the two.

┬á“It was on Friday afternoon that the BDF scuba divers were able to retrieve one of the bodies. A search team had to be called off last week because it was windy and the water was cold, which deterred the search team to continue with their search,” said Badirwang.

He also stated that the first body that was recovered by BDF was sent to Orapa Primary Hospital mortuary for a post mortem.

He said that the other body was recovered on Saturday when a search was resumed.

Badirwang said that the police are investigating the matter to establish what could have led to the incident.  He said that one of the deceased is 45 years while another one is aged 40.
┬á“There were such cases in villages such as Rakops in Boteti but this one is the first incident. We are still investigating the matter and one of the man who happened to have been there when the incident took place is assisting police with the investigations. Currently, we are still lost as to what could have led to the drowning of the two fishermen.”
