The Minister of Local Government Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi has made another u-turn, saying she will not be contesting for the 2018 Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) Primary elections.
Venson-Moitoi has in the past told The Telegraph sister publication Sunday Standard that she would be contesting for the 2018 Primary election but she has since made a u-turn.
At the time it was reported that Venson-Moitoi was eying the position of Vice President but unfortunately sit appears she was not in the good books of President Mokgweetsi Masisi.
In an interview with the Telegraph on Monday this week, Venson-Moitoi said she had long made her mind when she applied for the position of AU that she would not be contesting for the 2018 primary election.
“I had long made my mind that I would not be standing. It’s just that the media was on my back and giving me some positions I have never thought about. I am an active member of the BDP and I will continue to be active in the party,” said Venson-Moitoi
Asked if she was eyeing the position of Speaker of the National Assembly, Venson-Moitoi declined to comment further saying she could not talk about that at the moment. She said she would wait for 2019 elections and after that she “can be able to answer that question.”
Some of notable candidates for Serowe South Constituency are that of former Permanent Secretary Kolatamo Malefho, former Minister Tebelopele Seretse. Other candidates are Sefane Phuthego, Lesedi Phuthego and Oteng Thankane.
Some of the BDP heavy weights who made it to parliament during President Mogae’s term and still want to make a comeback are that of Jacob Nkate, Tebelelo Seretse and Oliphant Mfa.
In the BDP approved summary Report another interesting Constituency to look at is Serowe West where Tshekedi Khama will lock horns with Keletso Rakhudu and Moemedi Dijeng.
Keletso Rakhudu lost election in 2014 after he was beaten by Haskings Nkgaigwa of Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) who is currently a member of Alliance for the Progressive (AP).
Bernard Bolele who lost to Joseph Moleph in 2014 for Mahalapye West will be trying his luck for the second time.
Edwin Batshu, Botlogile Tshireletso, Degraaf , Unity Dow, Kagiso Molatlhegi and youthful Minister Bogolo kenewedo are some of the BDP members who will not be contesting for this year’s primary elections.
