Win over Double Action leaves GU on the cusp of first league title

Gaborone United (GU) ladies’ team is eyeing to clinch its first ever women’s league title when it faces Big Sisters this coming Saturday.

The Reds ladies’ team took the fate of their destiny in their own hands when they saw off defending champions Double Action 2 – 1 in a game played at Lekidi West this past Saturday.

Goals by Keitumetse Dithebe and Laone Moloi’s wickedly deflected goal each side of Segakolodi Didukanyane’s spot kick strike were enough to leave GU on the brink of the title.

The team’s head of Marketing and Communications Herbert Letsebe says the team’s aim is “to win the league for the first time in the elite Division 1 league and make it to COSAFA and CAF competitions.”

GU is level on points with log leaders Double Action but have a game in hand. Both teams are currently on 34 points each. The league is expected to conclude this coming weekend. A league title win will keep GU’s dreams of playing in the continent alive.

“The team has ambition of growth and making it to the regional and continental competitions. We want to dominate local ladies’ competitions and become perennial competitors in COSAFA and CAF competition. The aim is to play against the top African teams. Playing in Africa will market the players and the GU brand as a whole which will be beneficial to the local teams,” the GU head of Marketing and Communication explains.

According to Letsebe, the GU ladies’ want to make a debut in COSAFA and CAF to learn and gain experience. The plan is to use the platform to build so that ‘they can seriously compete for honours and glory in the coming years.’

To push the ladies’ team across the finish line, Letsebe is calling on supporters to cheer them. “We plead with our supporters to come in numbers to rally behind the team so that it can overcome their opponents and win the league in style. The supporters have been supportive to the ladies and we need their support in the last game. They have to come and celebrate the season success,” Letsebe implores.

Meanwhile, GU is still awaiting to hear what will happen regarding their abandoned game against FC Ambassadors. BFA is yet to make determination on the fixture after the latter did not pitch up at the ground in March.

“According to play rules and regulations if the team does not pitch up at the ground the opponents are given 3 points and 2 goals. And we are waiting for the authorities to do the needful” Letsebe says.

The league champions will have opportunity to play in the national DTCB sponsored tournament in which the winner will qualify for the COSAFA Zonal champions league qualifiers.

The game is billed for Lekidi at 1530hrs. Entrance is P10.
