Women in sports celebrated

Botswana Football Association’s Lekidi Football Centre has been announced as the home of the inaugural Botswana Women Sports Awards, billed for March 25, 2023.

The expected glamorous awards event is geared towards rewarding the outstanding women athletes and administrators in sport as a way of encouraging and motivating the womenfolk to continue to partake in sports.

According to the Awards Coordinator, Kesego Okie of Inside BW Women Sports and Blue Skies PR Agency, preparations for the awards are at an advanced date, with impressive support coming in from the private sector.

“The Awards, aimed at celebrating excellence in women sports, are a partnership between Inside BW Women Sports Magazine, Women and Sport Botswana, the Botswana National Olympic Committee, the Botswana Football Association and Blue Skies PR Agency,” she said.

Okie highlighted that Vunani Fund Managers had sponsored the debut awards at P40,000, with the Botswana Medicines Regulatory Authority coming in with P20,000 sponsorship and VTM Securities supporting with P10,000. She said BFA hosted the awards launch in January 2023, and will now host the main event, alongside a P10,000 financial contribution. Other entities are in-kind donors, with a variety of interesting and different tokens of appreciation for the different winners.

Okie mentioned that they are still in search of sponsors who are passionate about sports, gender parity as well as talent development and recognition. On how the Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sports and Culture(MYSC) is supporting the noble and unique initiative, Okie indicated that they are still in engagement with both Botswana National Sport commission (BNSC) and the Ministry, on how they will be supporting the awards, expressing hope that the two custodians of sports and gender, would accede to their request. She explained that their partner, WASBO, is the one dealing directly with the two entities.

The 3 top awards at the inaugural awards are Sportswoman of the Year with disability (P20,000), Sportswoman of the year (P20,000) and Team of the year (P25,000).
