Work on SSKB stadium resumes following tender related hiatus

The much-delayed work on the construction and upliftment of the SSKB stadium in Mogoditshane is expected to get underway anytime soon.

When answering a questionnaire from The Telegraph Sport, BDF spokesperson Tebo Dikole explained that delays on the project were due to a tender dispute involving one of the bidders.

“After awarding the tender, one of the four shortlisted bidders lodged a complaint, which was dismissed by Ministerial Tender Committee (MTC) on 8th February 2021,” Colonel Dikole explained.

He however did not reveal the names of the shortlisted companies and the one that was disputing the P5 million tender which was awarded on 16th December 2020.

The BDF is in the process of implementing the tender, which is currently at contract signing stage.

The project scope covers football pitch, provision and laying of turf, running track and associated works. Dikole also says the capacity of the stadium is not part of the project.

The idea of reconstructing the stadium was initially touted in 2016 when it was closed because it was not meeting the standards.

Before its closure, the SSKB stadium was one of the venues constantly used to host premier league matches.

It was however scraped off the hosting list after it was found not to be meeting the FIFA and CAF standards.

Once completed, the stadium is expected to relieve the shortage of sport hosting venues and reduce travel for teams in the vicinity of Gaborone.

The teams have on many occasions been compelled to travel to neighbouring villages and towns to play their league matches.

Absence of adequate match day venues has forced over reliance on the National Stadium, which is on some occasions out for bound for the elite league matches.

This is largely due to the fact that as a multi event venue, the national stadium is at times closed for the turf to recover and also sometimes is not available because it has been booked by other organisations.

Music festivals, parties, weddings, churches, BDF, Police and Prisons day celebrations are some of the activities that are annually hosted at the national stadium host.
