Botswana Wrestling Federation (BWF) will wrap up its calendar of the year with the seventh national wrestling championship earlier next month.
Wrestlers will be come face to face for the first time after the last physical tournament which was held on the 29th February 2020.This was revealed by the Botswana Wrestling Federation president, Moagi Sharp.
He explained that there will be individual categories and team categories in freestyle wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling and women wrestling styles. BWF will award 15 Medals for the participants. There are five Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals reserved for winners under the different categories.
“BWF progress was most affected by the pandemic. The aim of the upcoming tournament is to unite and bring back wrestlers who lost interest during Covid-19 challenges, and also to check fitness level of wrestlers in a wrestling mat,” Sharp added.
The BWF president said the introduction of pro wrestling during the pandemic was not easy but the Federation launched it with a view to attract future sponsors.
On the other hand, Sharp observed that majority of Batswana like professional wrestling, hence it was BWF’s intention to introduce it with a view to market the product better to Batswana and potential sponsors for both pro and Olympic wrestling.
Even though BWF has not partnered with any sponsor yet, Sharp said the federation has introduced Power Rumble Pure Still Water as a way of raising funds for equipment. He added that the main challenge is that there is no wrestling equipment.
The federation says they are focused on finding potential sponsors who will sponsor shows being Power Rumble and Claw Hammer in Pro Wrestling and in Olympic Wrestling, BWF ‘s National Wrestling Championships.
“Next year our main intention is to Kickstart Pro Wrestling Shows countrywide starting in April 2022 (Gaborone), May at Francistown, June hosted in Ghanzi and various places respectively. The objective is to take pro wrestling to Batswana and also to change the mindset of them with a view to differentiate pro wrestling and Olympic wrestling. BWF will always be traveling the across the country to recruit potential wrestlers,” Sharp noted.
Meanwhile, the BWF committee and affiliates will hold its Annual General Meeting on Saturday 4th December 2021 in Mahalapye at Cresta Hotel. This will be followed by national wrestling tournament which will be on the 11th December 2021 in Selibe Phikwe. The venue of the tournament is yet to be confirmed.
