Yesteryear stars to shine during Bakgatla Heritage Day

As part of the month-long heritage celebrations, Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela have planned to host a soccer expo on September 18 at Buffaloes Ground in Mochudi.

The one-day extravaganza will bring together yesteryear and current stars in an event which is expected to attract thousands of football lovers in Kgatleng district.

Event organiser Oaitse Lekoko told Sunday Standard that during the month of September, Bakgatla have decided to honour their culture and appreciate those who have contributed immensely in uplifting their culture. “A number of activities have been put in place to celebrate our culture.

During our deliberations, we realised that you cannot talk about Bakgatla and forget the impact that football had in bringing our tribe together. Right now, Mochudi Centre Chiefs is the pride of Kgatleng through their performances in the country’s elite league. So we decided that next Sunday (September 18) we host a soccer expo where we’ll have a number of games,” he said.

Lekoko pointed out that the soccer expo will bring together a number of Kgatleng football sides amongst them Chiefs, Buffaloes, Morwa Rising Stars, Morwa Dynamos, Modipane Fast XI, Marico Fighters, Madikwe and many more.

“It will be a fun filled day. This event will bring our legends together and enable us to say thank you for the foundation they laid. Some of us didn’t have an opportunity to see Sexton Kowa playing and on the day we might see the glimpse of how he used to do it in between goals,” he added.
Some of the games penciled for next Sunday will see Dikgosi taking on Baruti and current Mochudi Centre Chiefs playing Kgatleng Select side. Yesteryear Chiefs players like Sipho ‘Zero’ Kgetlwe, Edwin ‘Hlabankane’ Masire, Richard ‘3 Litre’ Kwapa, Shemi Hunidzarira will also have an opportunity to show the youngsters how they used to play.

“We’ve been in touch with most of the legends and they have shown interest in making this day a success. We decided to host the event on a Sunday because Mochudi Centre Chiefs will be involved in a crucial Premier League game against ECCO City Greens on Saturday (September 17). So this will enable our people to attend the game and be able to attend the soccer expo the following day,” he continued.

Lekoko said that Kgosi Kgafela has endorsed the event and his committee is working closely with bogosi to ensure that the event is a success. Kgosi Kgafela is also expected to showcase his skills on the day. He called on Bakgatla from all the villages to grace the occasion as it will be bringing back the old memories.

On the day, it is expected that Bakgatla will also give a tribute to the fallen heroes like Irvin ‘Careca’ Moyo, Stephen Monageng, Shono ‘Madonsela’ Ngaka, Matshwenyego ‘Teenage’ Letsholo, Kaizer Mamapilo and many others.

“Though those players are no longer with us, they contributed in showing the football community that there is talent in the area. Their names shall forever remain in our minds,” he said.
Entrance fee is P10.
