Zapata is one leg in as Rollers’ new helmsman

By Anita Rannoba

Reining BTC premiership league champions, Township Rollers are finalising contractual terms with former Gaborone united coach, Rodolfo Zapata following the departure of Nikola Kavazovic.

It is reported that coaches across the continents had applied for the coaching post at Rollers but Zapata stood out among them all. According to Rollers Public Relations Officer (PRO), Bafana Pheto, they are in the final stages of negotiations.

“At the moment we do not have a head coach and Zapata is only invited for negotiations to see if we can work together or not. We are hoping for a mutual agreement. We expect negotiations to be concluded before the end of the week,” Pheto said.

Zapata was on Sunday invited by Rollers to watch their game against BR Highlanders of Mahalapye. Popa won 1 nil under the interim coach Thabo Mahala Motang.

The Argentinean born coach who currently resigned from Abuluhya Football Club Leopards Sports Club (AFC) of Kenya is rumoured to have not been pleased with his employers even though he joined the club early this year after resigning from Gaborone United (GU).  GU failed to honour contractual obligations with Zapata. The team owes him monthly salaries of close to P300 000. While at GU, Zapata was credited for good coaching skills even though his players were frustrated due to unpaid salaries.

Zapata signed a six month contract with the Kenyan side and he only served four months.
