Umbrella for Democratic Change (UD) will have the backing of the Alliance for Progressives (AP) in the Mochudi East by-election which will be held on 21 April.
AP Secretary General Phenyo Butale said they have sent an official communiqu├® to the UDC leadership informing them of their intention to rally behind UDC during the upcoming by election.
But UDC Head of Communications Moeti Mohwasa insisted that they have not received any correspondence from AP.
”Nothing official has reached us so far. We learn from members of the public,” Mohwasa in an interview on Monday.
On the other hand Butale insisted that “immediately after Ralekgetho ward by-election we dispatched a communiqu├® informing the party of our intentions to rally behind their candidate during the by-election in Mochudi East.”
The AP which is an offshoot of the Botswana Movement for Democracy (MBD) has been accused of failing to join hands with other opposition parties under the UDC to avoid vote splitting.
But Butale said that they were willing to work with the UDC as demonstrated by the gesture they extended to UDC in the upcoming by election in Mochudi.
The Botswana Congress Party (BCP), the Botswana National Front and Botswana People’s (BPP) which are members of the UDC are expected to join hands in the upcoming by election. The agreement for the contracting partners of the UDC makes it mandatory that they should support one another in by elections.
