Basket ball league stumbles, fans blame in on the weather man

For two weeks running, the local basketball league has had to call off fixture games, officials and fans are blaming it on the weatherman. Rains which have disrupted basket ball fixtures are expected to affect the calendar of the league which was supposed to end during this coming weekend, to make way for the Basketball Championship slated for end of the month. The Basketball Championship is played by teams in the top four of the league and it will be delayed by storms as there is no indoor basketball court in this country.

Last weekend, the windy raining storm spoiled an anticipated top of the table showdown between rivals Spartans and Troopers, much to the disappointment of basketball fanatics. This game had all the promises of a thrilling encounter with both teams vying for the league title. However mathematics dictates the last year league winners Spartans will need a “Jesus miracle” to clinch the league from the spirited Troopers who are undefeated in all games.

Poor display by Spartans, as they lost to Dolphins while Troopers continued with their winning streak dented hopes of the last year champions. But a top four battle is underway and Bobotho Ratsoma’s boys would try by all means to consolidate their position in the top four as Troopers have already run away with the title. For women’s league on Wednesday a stormy weather forced the league committee to postpone a game between BU Ravens and BDFV ladies. This prompted the league committee to call an urgent meeting on Thursday. The emergency meeting was convened to decide a way forward, on how to go about the games which have been affected by the weather. “Well the league games will continue and games will be played during this week if weather permits.

As at now we will only ensure that games which are played are the essential ones, especially games in which teams are vying for the top 4 position,” said the League Secretary Peter Ubakar. He said the league will make sure that the games involving teams vying for the Championships are squeezed in so that the Botswana Basketball calendar is not disturbed. He said the championships should go on as planned and BBA is looking for alternative venues in case there is rain.
