Botswana Congress Party (BCP) has lost another councillor at the Francistown City Councillor to the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP).
Councillor for Government Ward, Albert Mosojane’s resignation comes barely three weeks after another councillor for Ramotswa South, Molemi Rankgomo defected from BCP to join the Botswana National Front (BNF).
In an interview with Sunday Standard, BDP acting executive secretary, Lee Lesetedi confirmed that Mosojane has joined his party. “I can confirm that Mosojane has joined BDP, he was from BCP,” he said.
BCP publicity secretary, Taolo Lucas also confirmed that Mosojane has tendered his resignation letter to the party office.
Lucas said Mosojane did not give any reasons for his resignation but only said that he was joining the BDP.
Asked to comment further on why his party is experiencing a spate of resignations, Lucas said that the party has not made any enquiry but added that there might be reasons why the councillors are quitting.
“These resignations coincide with primary elections. For some it is a question of feeling that they have not performed as per expectation and they decide to leave. I don’t know how that helps them,” he added.
On allegations that the party leadership is endorsing some candidates to stand for elections, and this be the reason behind the resignations, Lucas denied the allegations as untrue saying the party never participate in the primary elections; some councillors are jittery and anxious.
