A total of P13 231 570 000 will be spent on the construction of 77 construction projects during the Transitional National Development Plan that will be implemented during the 2023/24 and 2024/25 financial years.
The projects have been divided into eight packages and one with the highest cost (P3.3 billion) will be carried out under Package 4. The latter includes reconstruction of the 200-kilometre Francistown-Nata Road. During the 2023/24 financial year, P700 million will be spent on the project and the figure will rise to P1.1 billion during the 2024/25 financial year. A related but less costly project under this package is the reconstruction of the 100 kilometre Nata-Gweta road along the Nata-Maun road. The latter will be carried out between 2023 and 2025 at a total cost of P580 million. The 50-km Nata-Ngwasha Gate section as well as the 14-km up to Pandamatenga will be reconstructed at a total cost of P400 million.
The second costliest roads are under Package 1 and include construction of a 27-km stretch of road connecting Mogoditshane, Gabane and Mmankgodi at a cost of P1.4 billion and the development of a P250 million leather industry park in Lobatse. Also included in this package is the construction of a 12-km Molepolole bypass at P78 million, Kanye hospital at P20 million and a 46-km dual carriageway between Boatle and Lobatse at a cost of P40 million.
Package 3 will cost P1.9 billion and includes an P820 million land servicing expense in special economic zones and a similar P430 million project in the SPEDU region; construction of a P250 million Level 1 hospital in Lerala [the very first in Tswapong] and similar hospitals in Tsabong, Tonota and Shoshong at a much lower cost of P45 million; and refurbishment of Princess Marina and Nyangabgwe referral hospitals at a combined cost of P110 million.
Packages 3 and 6 will get the least amount of money – P730 million and P926 million respectively. Package 3 includes the construction of 20 new primary schools (including one in Block 10 Gaborone) at a cost of P350 million and construction and upgrading of nine health posts and clinics with a maternity wing. Package 6 includes expansion of unspecified schools at a cost of P200 million, development of land board offices in Maun, Tsabong and Letlhakeng; construction of staff housing at P150 million; construction of customary court offices in Mochudi, Molepolole and Maun at a cost of p110 million; and a roof for the Francistown stadium at a cost of P105 million.
